A Louisiana couple died in Puerto Rico on New Year's Eve after their liveaboard catamaran exploded and burned at Puerto Real Marina in Cabo Rojo. Dead are Gather and Ginna Tannehill, owners of the 42-foot catamaran Miss Adventure. Police said the fire began in the galley. The couple was described as being in their late 60s.
Writing for Practical Sailor, Darrell Nicholson said, "Although the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, all evidence points to the liquid petroleum gas (LPG) system used for cooking. Over the years we've discussed the risks of having liquid petroleum gas onboard many times, and I recently shared frequent PS contributor and marine surveyor Capt.
