Second Generation Innovation
From sculpting space-age composites to writing proprietary software, Travis Fickett can do it all. His participation in the family business marks a new chapter in the evolution of Great Harbour Trawlers and Mirage Manufacturing.
While his father, Ken, began his boat building career at the age of seven, Travis has in some ways one-upped his old man. He watched boats take shape from a playpen on the Mirage factory, and by the time he was walking and talking, was diligently disassembling machinery and old appliances to see what they were made of. This almost got him in trouble when, at age six, he completely disassembled a brand-new outboard and spread the parts across the storeroom floor. Rather than dole out punishment, his father asked “can you put it back together?" Travis did, and it ran perfectly. As a child of the Internet age, Travis proved equally adept at digital assembly, and at age 15, he developed the company's proprietary Glass Helm system, which links functions such as radar displays, navigation information and engine data to helm-mounted touch-screen displays. After earning a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida, and gaining significant experience in the use of high-tech composite materials, he came on board full-time at Mirage, and now oversees manufacturing, manages the company's information technology systems, and remains hands-on in all phases of the design and build process.
